Research, training and educational project, entitled ” The Effect of Pre- and Postnatal High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and Moderate Intensity Continuous Training (MICT) on Biological, Functional and Psychological Markers of Pregnancy Disorders and Non-communicable Diseases in Mothers and Offsprings”, is implemented at Gdansk University of Physical Education and Sport Poland.

In recent years, a great deal of research has been published proving that regular exercise during the perinatal period leads to health benefits for mother and baby. Nevertheless, the results of these studies mainly focus on low to moderate intensity exercise.

Thanks to the parallel implementation of the HIIT and MICT training programmes carried out in pregnant and postpartum women, we will answer the so far open question to what extent the level of exercise intensity in the perinatal period is important in maintaining the proper course of pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium, and the health of children. Following a holistic approach to health, in cooperation with experts from other scientific disciplines, we analyse selected biological, functional and psychological parameters of women. We examine the post-exercise changes at the physiological, biochemical and molecular levels. The subject of the analysis is both the immediate effects of a single exercise session and the long-term effects following the completion of individual meso- and macrocycles of special HIIT and MICT programmes.

The “HIIT Mama” programme is based on many years of scientific research and practical experience from the FemFit project, conducted at AWFiS as part of extensive international cooperation. We implement the HIIT Mama project in accordance with the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO, 2020) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG, 2020) on physical activity in pregnant and postpartum women.

The project is coordinated by dr hab. Anna Szumilewicz, prof. AWFiS

Project time framework: January 2021 – August 2031

Part of the tasks of the HIIT Mama project is carried out as the project “The impact of health-promoting high-intensity interval exercises (HIIT) on changes in the level of irisin and other selected markers of carbohydrate and lipid homeostasis in pregnant women”, co-financed by the National Science Centre as part of the Miniatura competition (15.12.2021- 14.12.2022)
